There are not many homes that have little girls in them that have not heard of, seen, or owned a Barbie doll. They are much loved and millions have been sold all over the world.
There have been many fashion dolls on the market over the last fifty years but none have a personality and an every changing way of life like Barbie
Barbie was inspired by Lilli, a 1950s cartoon charactor in the German paper Bild Zeitung and was developed by Californian, Mattel from the original Lilli doll.
BARBIE was 'born' in 1959 and was made by Mattell. She came on to the market at a time when rock'n'roll was the rage and teenagers sported pony tails and fashionable clothes.
Barbie was a stylized adult female doll who represented the fashion of the day. Prior to the 1950s most children were given baby dolls to play with.
Barbie was different she had an elegant slim waist, high shapely breasts, long slender limbs and she wore lots of make up and represented the ideal American young lady of her time.
Over the years Barbie has been greatly modified and she has become younger and more youthful with a large smiling mouth and wide eyes.
Barbie has sported fifties evening gowns, sixties minis, seventies bell bottoms and halter tops, eighties designer dresses.
In the nineties a song was released called Barbie Girl (you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere) and nowadays we have remote controlled roller skating Barbie and she doesnt look a day older.
Barbara Millicent Roberts daughter of George and Margaret Roberts from Willows, Wisconsin, USA. is truly a remarkable young lady. She went to high school in Willows, has had a long term boyfriend called Ken whom she has never married despite having bought the wedding clothes. They split up in 2004 (maybe because Ken was reluctant to get married?) and then got back together with him in 2006. Prior to that she was a Flight Attendant, Astronaut,Doctor,to name but a few of her sixty careers, has owned various cars, loves animals, and stays forever active and beautiful and thanks to some very clever marketing is still very popular today. Truly an American Legend.
