There are not many homes that have little girls in them that have not heard of, seen, or owned a Barbie doll. They are much loved and millions have been sold all over the world.
There have been many fashion dolls on the market over the last fifty years but none have a personality and an every changing way of life like Barbie
Barbie was inspired by Lilli, a 1950s cartoon charactor in the German paper Bild Zeitung and was developed by Californian, Mattel from the original Lilli doll.
BARBIE was 'born' in 1959 and was made by Mattell. She came on to the market at a time when rock'n'roll was the rage and teenagers sported pony tails and fashionable clothes.
Barbie was a stylized adult female doll who represented the fashion of the day. Prior to the 1950s most children were given baby dolls to play with.
Barbie was different she had an elegant slim waist, high shapely breasts, long slender limbs and she wore lots of make up and represented the ideal American young lady of her time.
Over the years Barbie has been greatly modified and she has become younger and more youthful with a large smiling mouth and wide eyes.
